Azerbaijan’s Ethnic Cleansing in Nagorno-Karabakh and Genocidal Policy

Lemkin Institute Calls on UN to Rescind Azerbaijan as Climate Summit Host

“By granting Azerbaijan the honor of hosting this important event, the
UN is endorsing genocidal speech, genocidal policies, and
dictatorship, which benefits neither the climate nor the people of the
world. The choice of Azerbaijan as COP host legitimizes, rationalizes,
and normalizes genocide in world politics. Furthermore, it threatens the credibility of the principles established by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. In the interests of genocide prevention, human rights, and the legitimacy of the United Nations as a body representing the people of the world, the United Nations must rescind Azerbaijan’s recognition as host of COP29 and either find another host country or hold this year’s meeting in Bonn, Germany, COP’s default meeting place,” the statement reads.

UN Conference Delegates are Called to Support the Release of Armenians Held in Azerbaijan

German civil activists and human rights advocates have demanded Azerbaijan and President Ilham Aliyev release the Armenian prisoners before the UN COP29 conference on climate change to be held in the Azerbaijani capital Baku in November.

“It is tragic enough that the UN is greenwashing the genocidal dictatorship of Azerbaijan. That such an important conference is organized in a country in which human rights are violated in the worsts possible way,” stated one of the activists, Jonathan Spangenberg.

“We went to the basement of a school. It was full and everyone was crying. I was hungry. I asked my mother if that man could give me a piece of bread to eat,” stated 6-year-old Aram.

By Stephan Pechdimaldji

Those were the same qualities displayed by the students at TUMO who understood the value that technology can play in making a difference by solving an intractable problem. For Silicon Valley, Armenia offers a similar lesson and is a country worth betting on.

Azerbaijan’s Destruction of Armenian Heritage in Artsakh Continues Unabated
By Rhea Nayyar

Despite the scale and severity of the damages, the erasure of Armenian cultural patrimony by Azerbaijan remains woefully under- reported, in large part due to the regime’s crackdown on independent journalists.

Azerbaijan’s and Russia’s Campaign of False Narratives Against the France-Armenia Partnership
By Sossi Tatikyan

Baku has targeted the EU, its mission in Armenia, its individual
member states, the U.S., international, intergovernmental and
non-governmental organizations and watchdogs, scholars,
analysts and journalists. It is trying to ensure impunity for the blockade, military offensives, large- scale war and the eventual ethnic cleansing of Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Armenia’s Ordeal in a Resource-Driven World
By Nuri Kino

“According to the resolution, the EU is supposed to reduce its dependency on gas exports from Azerbaijan and demanded that Brussels review its relations with the country. The resolution was non-binding, and likely won’t be implemented. I guess gas is more important than human rights. What a disgrace.”

Azerbaijan’s Civil Society Crackdown Intensifies Ahead of COP29
By Rovshan Mammadli

As Baku prepares to host COP29, the largest international
climate summit, the Azerbaijani government has ramped up its
crackdown on the remaining vestiges of its civil society. The
decision to host COP29 in Azerbaijan, announced in
December 2023, has prompted significant concerns about the country’s high corruption index, poor human rights record, unwavering reliance on fossil fuels, and limited plans for emission reductions.

Armenian Refugees Can Return, But Will They Find Their Nagorno-Karabakh?
By Katia De Monte

The tribunal’s decision to ask Baku to allow Armenians to return to the region is a step in the right direction. However, given the realities on the ground, this should not be celebrated as a victory. Refugees are unlikely to recognise the place they once called home.

Azerbaijan’s Hybrid Warfare
By Sossi Tatikyan

Azerbaijan manipulates anti-colonial resentment against France
in several African countries, using tactics and narratives similar
to those employed by Russia to increase its influence in Sub-
Saharan Africa. This strategy promotes the role of Wagner
instead of the peacekeeping role by France, the UN and potentially also the EU.
