Former ICC Prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo Calls on Azerbaijan to Release Armenian Hostages as COP29 Looms

“The genocide committed by Azerbaijan against Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh/Artsakh in 2023 exemplifies the ongoing threat. Through starvation, bombing, and instilling fear, Azerbaijan has pursued a genocidal campaign. President Aliyev’s chilling statement— “If the ethnic Armenians do not leave our lands of their own free will, we will chase them away like dogs, and we are doing that”—reflects this brutal reality. The continuous incarceration of 23 Nagorno-Karabakh people in Baku jails serves as a stark warning to those who might attempt to return,” said Ocampo in an open letter.

Samantha Power Concludes Visit to Armenia

“In talking to Armenians, it is very clear that the focus rights now is on building resilience – building resilience in the food security domain, building resilience when it comes to extreme weather events and climate shocks, and, of course, energy resilience so they are getting their energy from a more diversified pool of suppliers. USAID is really privileged to support efforts in each of these domains,” states Power.

European Justice Center Warns of Systematic Erasure of Armenian Christian Heritage in Nagorno-Karabakh in New Report

The European Center for Law and Justice (ECLJ) warned of Azerbaijan’s systematic erasure of Armenian Christian heritage in Nagorno-Karabakh in its report.

  • Notes that considering Azerbaijan’s history of cultural erasure in Nakhchivan and the destruction of heritage in Nagorno-Karabakh between 2020 and 2023, the concern that Azerbaijan will continue its cultural erasure in Nagorno-Karabakh is well-founded.
  • Emphasizes that the international response to Azerbaijan’s destruction of Armenian culture has been strong—but not strong enough. As evidenced by the destruction and revisionism that continues to this day, Azerbaijan has not heeded the international community’s calls to respect Armenia’s cultural heritage.

Azerbaijan Ethnically Cleansed Armenians. It Should Pay a Price
By Thomas Becker

Unfortunately, however, the international community continues to whitewash Aliyev’s crimes. In the same year that Azerbaijan was designated one of the most repressive places on the planet and Nagorno-Karabakh, following Azerbaijan’s takeover, the least free place in the entire world, Azerbaijan was chosen to host the annual global climate conference, COP29, this autumn. This is a disgrace.

By Michael Rubin

If diplomacy is back and the adults really are back in charge in Washington, there can only be one response: The United States must treat Azerbaijan as a pariah and rogue regime.
