Azerbaijan’s Greenwashing of Ethnic Cleansing in Nagorno- Karabakh and Genocidal Policy

Democracy Now: After 2023 Ethnic Cleansing of Armenians from Nagorno- Karabakh, Why Did Azerbaijan Get to Host COP29?

The Freedom House report, “Why Are There No Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh?” draws on more than 300 interviews with Karabakh Armenians who survived the attacks and described human rights violations, including the torture and mass killing of Armenians by Azerbaijani forces with impunity. The report also found ongoing violations in Nagorno- Karabakh as Azerbaijan destroys Armenian cultural monuments, churches, cemeteries and residential neighbourhoods.

Prominent Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was among those who did not attend COP29 in protest. Instead, she spent time in Yerevan, Armenia. “Azerbaijan, as previous people here on the stage have said, is an extremely repressive state, a petrostate that is planning to expand fossil fuel production and is responsible for ethnic cleansing. It is absolutely nauseating, to say the least, the hypocrisy, the extreme hypocrisy, that this climate conference, COP29, is being held in that country right now,” stated Thunberg.

Armenia did not participate in the COP29 climate summit in Baku due to Azerbaijan’s refusal to free at least 23 Armenian political prisoners detained there. Meanwhile, other Armenian activists who planned to attend the talks were denied visas to Azerbaijan.

European Center for Law & Justice New Report:
Human Rights in Azerbaijan: The Tragic Fate of Armenian, Azerbaijani, and French Prisoners

  • Highlights the systematic human rights violations in Azerbaijan, emphasizing the ongoing repression of political opponents, journalists, and civil society.
  • Highlights Azerbaijan’s ethnic cleansing of Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh, with systematic efforts to erase cultural heritage and replace the displaced population with Azerbaijanis.
  • Points out the use of torture and degrading treatment in Azerbaijani prisons, particularly targeting Armenian detainees and political dissidents.
  • Underscores the plight of Armenian prisoners, mentioning emblematic cases like Ruben Vardanyan, who has faced arbitrary detention and alleged torture. Azerbaijan exploits international events, like hosting COP29, to divert attention from its human rights abuses while continuing repressive practices.
  • Stresses the urgent need for international sanctions and interventions to ensure the release of detainees, uphold human rights, and prevent further atrocities.

Driven By Fear From Nagorno-Karabakh

“My home in Stepanakert was located in a neighborhood considered the heart of the city. Most of the buildings here were constructed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This was old Stepanakert—the place where the city was born. Many of the buildings in this neighborhood are listed in the state registry of monuments, recognized as historical and cultural heritage sites. One of the goals of destroying this neighborhood is to wound our pride, undermine our moral values, and deprive us of the will to return.”

Trump’s Return: Global Authoritarianism and Armenia’s Struggle for Democracy
By Karena Avedissian

Countries like Armenia, with fledgling democracies heavily reliant on Western support for democratic development, are particularly vulnerable to the ripple effects of democratic decline in the West.
