Washington, D.C. – Global ARM issued the following statement regarding yesterday’s announcement from the Armenian Government regarding its support for a potential peace treaty with Azerbaijan.

“Yesterday, the Armenian government announced the finalization of negotiations on the text of the Peace Treaty with Azerbaijan. Global ARM supports a just and durable peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan. This aligns with U.S. interests in supporting peace and preventing the outbreak of new military aggression in the South Caucasus.

Global ARM’s priorities remain the same: To strengthen U.S.-Armenia economic and security ties, deter further aggression by Azerbaijan, and hold the Aliyev regime accountable for atrocities committed against Armenians.

Any peace agreement must be durable and just. Ilham Aliyev has violated every written agreement and international judicial order prohibiting military aggression, hate, blockades, destruction of Christian churches and heritage, and racial discrimination against Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh. The Aliyev regime continues to illegally occupy over 200 sq km of sovereign Armenian territory and detain Armenian hostages. The Azerbaijani occupation must end, and the hostages must be immediately and unconditionally released.

In contrast with Armenia’s support for peace, Aliyev has escalated threats against Armenia, increased military buildup both within Armenia and along the shared border, and openly derided the U.S., its strategic interests, and role in the region. Moreover, Azerbaijan’s repeated attempts at adding conditions and shifting the goal posts to the terms of a potential peace agreement require all stakeholders, especially the United States, to remain vigilant, and to use all available resources and capabilities to deter Azerbaijani aggression and bring about a just and equitable peace.

Global ARM will continue working with the Trump Administration and Congress to bolster growing U.S. Armenia ties, use all tools available to deter Azerbaijani aggression, and support a just and lasting peace in alignment with American interests.”
